Piana
Piana is female artist Naoko Sasaki: delicate and unique lyrics in Japanese electronic pop music. Piana was born in 1976, the year the debut album "Japanese Girl" by pop idol Akiko Yano was released. After several bands and projects, Piana started to play solo in 2000. She uses guitar, piano, organ, noise, glitch sound, and her own voice. For Piana making music is like writing a diary.
Though there is little direct influence from other musicians in Piana's music, she names among her favourite artists: Sigur Ros, Matmos, Steve Reich, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Aphex Twin and female artists such as Brigitte Fontaine, Björk, Kate Bush, and Stina Nordenstam.
More important, however, is Piana's affinity to the
literature of Banana Yoshimoto, Dazai Osamu, and Murakami Haruki in particular.
Similar to many traditional women writers in Japan, Piana expresses her
own emotional experiences and personal feelings in lyrics that are intimate
and melancholy, condensed into a mix of electronic and acoustic music.
